Chronicle for Kenneth
McWaters
After graduating from Pampa High in 1957 I attended Texas Tech University
and squeezed the 5-1/2 year Bachelor of Architecture course into six years.
After a three year apprenticeship served in Lubbock and a five day state
exam, I received my Architecture license and moved to Dallas in 1966.
I married Jackie Lee Beauchamp of Pampa and we had two children by the time
I graduated and a third in 1968. Jackie passed over in '74 and I have never
remarried. My parents followed the grandchildren to Dallas and later on to
Austin. My mother passed in '86 and my father in '95 shortly after returning
to Pampa. My brother Roger passed at 42 in 1981. He was in the Pampa High
class of '56.
I was a partner in an Architecture firm from 1966 to 1969. My real
love had always been real estate development and I continued to work in that
direction during that time. I obtained my Real Estate Broker's license, Interior
Design License, RE Finance Certificate, expanded Land Planning and zoning
specialties, and received certification to write before the SEC.
I opened an Investment Development Consulting Firm in 1970 and maintained
it in some form until I retired in 2001. I merged with a partner in 1978,
moved to Austin, and initiated my own real estate developments in various
Texas cities. Over the years I had projects in several states. I had fun
visiting every port-of-call on the Caribbean looking for resort development
property. I had 7 subdivisions under way simultaneously when the Texas
Banks crashed on "Black Tuesday" in 1986. That wasn't any fun, wiped me out.
I looked in Dallas for two years before I had to move to Atlanta in 1989
just to find work. Preparation for the Olympics was going on and I was a
project manager for the heavy concrete construction of two prisons and portions
of their Olympic stadium.
I returned to Dallas in 1994 as a business consultant. Most of my family
regrouped in Austin in '96 and finely back to Dallas in 2000. I had a massive
heart attack in August of '03 that resulted in a quadruple bypass surgery
and a defibrillator/pacemaker implant. I have authored two trade books and
continue to write to entertain myself. All three adult "children" and my
two grand kids live within 3 miles of me now in Dallas/Richardson.
There has been some excitement worth telling in my life. I was swindled out
of my 25% ownership in my first real estate development by LBJ -- while he
was in office. Met and was impressed with R. Reagan while he was in office.
I received death threats for uncovering a large scale land swindle in Texas.
I received death threats and threatened with class failure for exposing a
major, long-term embezzlement scheme at Texas Tech. I coached for my kids
and refereed soccer for twelve years. My grandson, at age two was "parent
abducted" to Turkey. It took a small fortune and about 3 years to get him
back. And the list goes on.
